Who among us doesn’t have experience with a friend, family member, community member, or even ourselves, who have struggled with some form of addiction?

     Karen has struggled with addiction since she was 18. She has also had long periods of sobriety. Karen was living with her mother. When her mother passed away, she could not afford to keep living in their home. Under the stress, after 13 years of sobriety, Karen relapsed. She knew she needed help. She went to rehab, then moved to a transitional, sober living program. She was doing great, however, she had exhausted the allowed time in transitional housing. Karen was once again facing homelessness. Ending up on the streets was not going to help her with recovery.

     Even though Karen did not have a car, she moved into one of our properties that is a little isolated. The plan was she would move to the rehabbed Lammers property when it reopened. Public transportation and shopping would be more accessible. In the interim, her sister would help with meetings, food shopping and appointments.

     This would keep Karen off the street, and give her the support she needed to stay clean. Several months passed, Karen let us know she did not want to move to Lammers. She had developed friendships with her housemates, they had been supportive. She did not want to leave. She had even become a support for another tenant who still struggled with his sobriety and they were attending meetings together.

     Karen had connected with a nearby church and has become the chairperson of a local support group for her addiction. For the first time in a long time, Karen says she feels like her life is on the right track. Here at A-HOME, she won’t have a time limit.
